Nasonex Nasal Spray contains mometasone furoate as its active ingredient. It belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. It is used for treatment of hay fever and perennial rhinitis in adults and children over 3 years of age.
Adults over the age of 18 years are given Nasonex to treat nasal polyps. Those who are allergic to mometasone furoate or any other ingredient of the medicine should not use it.
Others who should avoid using Nasonex include: - If you have an untreated nasal infection such as herpes - If you have undergone a nasal operation or have injured their nose
One should inform the doctor if you are experiencing any of the below conditions before you use Nasonex; - If you have or had tuberculosis - If you have other infections - If you other corticosteroid medications - If you have cystic fibrosis
When using this medication talk to your doctor about - Coming in contact with anyone who has chickenpox or measles, especially if you have a weak immune system - If you develop a throat or nose infection - If you have been using the medication for several months - If you suffer from a persistent irritation of the nose or throat
Nasonex can cause side effects, but they do not appear in everyone who takes this medication. The most serious and rare side effect of Nasonex is an allergic reaction to the drug. The symptoms include swelling on the face, lips, tongue, throat that leads to difficulty in breathing. Contact your doctor or visit the hospital emergency room immediately.
Some of the common side effects include: - Headache - Sneezing - Nose bleeds - Sore throat or nose - Ulcers in nose - Respiratory tract infection
Nasonex should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. You should not use a larger dose or use more spray then advised.
The dose for treatment of hay fever and perennial rhinitis in both children over 12 years old and adults is two sprays in each nostril once a day.
For children between 3 to 11 years, the dosage is one spray in each nostril once a day.
Nasonex effect is usually observed within 12 hours of first dose. However, the full benefit is seen only after 48 hours.
In case of nasal polyps, the dose for adults over 18 years of age is two sprays into each nostril once a day.
How to Use Nasal SprayWhen using nasal spray for the first time, prime the bottle by pumping in air the spray 10 times. You will see a fine mist is produced. Make sure you apply the bottle cap after every use. Keep the nozzle clean. - Shake the bottle and remove the cap - Blow your nose and then close one nostril with a finger. - Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the bottle upright - Breath in gently through your nose and when you are breathing, squirt a spray of fine mist into your nose - Breath out by your mouth and then spray again, if applicable - Repeat the same process for the other nostril as well
It is vital to clean your spray often else it might not work properly. Pull the nozzle off and remove the dust cap. Wash the dust cap and nozzle in warm water and under running water.
